January 2017 LootCrate Review!
Danger and I cracked open our first LootCrate of the year, and it was surprisingly good… It was surprising because the last few crates left a bit to be desired. We have each subscribed to LootCrate since it’s inception, I dropped my subscription a while back due to the crates not living up to my expectations and the fact that there are many other options for monthly toys, games and shirts. However, Danger has shown his unwavering support by staying a committed subscriber throughout the years with the promise this year of better crates. Let’s take a look at the origins themed crate…
Upon first glance the Lootcrate seems a bit lackluster, the box art on the inside pops, for sure, but it doesn’t look like a very diverse array. That Could also be because the shirt is covering up most of the items. Speaking of the shirt…
This shit is Boss. Pixelated Mario. Not the Super Mario Bros most are familiar with. That’s Motherfucking jump man from donkey kong (Note the 1 button). Before he was even named Mario. Just in case the year didn’t give it away, ’81 is when Donkey Kong debuted. Official Nintendo seal… I’m sold!
Best LootCrate shirt since Robocop, if not best of all time, of course you can’t go wrong with Mario, ever.
LootCrate exclusive Action comics number 1 reprint, first appearance of superman with certificate of authenticity.
This is pretty awesome, it’s great that they included a COA for collectors. It’s even better that you can actually get your hands on a copy that looks like the original, you can read it and enjoy it without having to click through a digital copy (I love comic books for the book as much as the reading material).
Really excited to read how the very first appearance of Superman went down. 1938! Holy Shit!
Here we have another lootcrate exclusive! 1940’s Captain America replica shield. 1:6 scale. We all know Captain America was the first avenger. A lab rat for the government scrawny Steve Rogers was given the super soldier serum, and became Captain America. Little known fact… this shield was only ever used in one issue of Captain America Comics (Issue 1). But it too closely resembled another hero, The Shield’s shield. So they gave Capt. a circular one. Of course there are backstories describing what happened to the shields and all that but it’s too much to go into here.
This thing is pretty nice. Has some weight to it, looks good on a mantle. The “Marvel” Logo on the stand that is imprinted directly behind the shield seems unnecessary, but all in all a great collector’s piece.
Very, very cool replica! Made out of high quality material. The base and everything looks good. What with the Marvel logo on the back though?
The Tiki Glass
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle tiki cup. This thing is pretty sweet. It’s an actual miniature cup.
Feels heavy, definitely ceramic. It has traditional tiki paint. It’s nice, and even better that you got shredder instead of 1 of the 4 turtles (Especially leonardo, he’s a dick), and have to buy the rest of them for a full set. Shredder can stand alone. Looks like you have a fine shotglass there.
Cool display piece, no practical use for it as far as I can tell.
In the Lootcrate magazine they included a fortune for each tiki.
“You may want to rule this year with a pointy iron fist but being a control freak probably won’t get you the results you want. It’s ok to ask for help or delegate tasks. Learn to let go of the things you can’t control and make the best of it. Try not to mutate and anthropomorphize any more animals, they make terrible assistants. And don’t forget to polish your armor for maximum entrance drama.”
That was all very biblical until the mutation part, which was also what I feel is an unnecessary shot at Boobop and rocksteady. They did their best and they were awesome in the turtles movie (not the Michael Bay shit, i’m talking muppets.)
As with every LootCrate there’s a Loot pin, and Of course in following the origins theme there is the classic turtles logo on a sewer grate.
What can I say, I love the turtles. Not a fan of the Michael Bay shit, or the nickelodeon turtles (read the original comics if you think turtles have any place on a kid’s network) but the real turtles.
TMNT! One of the coolest pins to date!
The box is also a comic book holder, we forgot to take a picture but imagine this… original superman artwork, the reds, the yellows, the blues, with Superman, in true form, of the original comic, appearing on the outside of the inside-out box.
This is actually one of the most useful boxes yet. The others were all decorative.
It’s a comic holder, it’s very practical for the comics collected from various boxes.
Danger’s Final Thoughts – The last couple of crates have been very disappointing. They said they were going to improve the quality of the items this year. This is box #1 of a 3 box trial run to see if we want to proceed with the subscription. Extremely impressed, this is on of the best lootcrates in recent memory. The shirt is amazing and that’s half the cost of the box! Thumbs up!
